Actor Alec Baldwin accidentally shot Haylna Hutchins during the recording of a scene for the movie ‘Rust’ with a gun that should have been blank, but which, for unknown reasons, was loaded.
A New Mexico judge has sentenced 18 months in prison for a crime of involuntary manslaughter to Hannah Gutiérrez-Reed, the film’s weapons supervisor ruston whose film set actor Alec Baldwin held a gun that fired live ammunition and killed the director of photography, Haylna Hutchins.
It is the maximum penalty provided for the crimes for which he was found guilty by a jury on March 6 for the incident that occurred during the recording of this ‘western’.
The 27-year-old, who is responsible for firearms security and storage, has been acquitted of a separate charge of tampering with evidence.
The Prosecutor’s Office has argued at trial that the weapons supervisor failed to perform critical safety checks, so her mistakes allowed bullets to reach the set, alleging that her actions contributed to Hutchins’ death.
However the defense attorney of the accused has indicated during the trial that the fault does not lie with the weapons supervisor, but that her client has been used as a scapegoat. Thus, she has questioned how the ammunition arrived on the set and has alleged that the production team had created an unsafe environment that created “really difficult conditions.”
On October 21, 2021, actor Alec Baldwin accidentally shot the director of photography while filming a scene and with a gun that should have been blank, but which, for unknown reasons, was loaded. Both Baldwin and the gunsmith, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, were formally charged with involuntary manslaughter.
Gutiérrez-Reed is the first person to be tried in the case, which put the spotlight on the film industry’s safety standards.
