Kurgan residents do not evacuate flooded areas because they do not believe in the seriousness of the threat, the governor of the Kurgan region, Vadim Shumkov, said on April 16.
During an inspection of the dam in Kurgan, Russian Emergency Situations Minister Alexander Kurenkov asked Shumkov why city residents were not evacuating flooded areas.
“Disbelief. Many say it was similar in 2016, but it was not scary, in 1994 it was scary, but we survived. But now it is different! At the same time, two reservoirs released 1.3 billion cubic meters and this water flows here.”– Shumkov answered.
Shumkov added that people are constantly warned of danger, sirens sound in the city every two hours and residents receive five to seven SMS messages from emergency services.
Recall that on the morning of April 16, the water level in the Tobol River near Kurgan rose by more than one meter, the administration of the Kurgan region reported.
It is noted that at 08:00 (06:00 Moscow time) the water had risen to 742 cm, 111 cm more than a day ago. In the last six hours the level has risen 8 cm and continues to rise. At the same time, the Hydrometeorological Center reported that precipitation is expected.
The administration called for the immediate evacuation of residents located in the flood zone.
The day before, the governor of the Kurgan region, Vadim Shumkov, warned that more than 1.3 billion m³ of water flows through the river, twice as much as in 1994, when its level rose more than 10 m.
