Teachers at Liberia’s Nimba University College staged a street protest against poor working conditions on February 2, according to the Liberia Daily Observer.
The faculty of the educational institution organized a protest in the city of Sanniquelly, blocking the main road.
The protesters demanded higher salaries and an increase in the university’s budget. The teachers who took to the streets said that the level of funding of their educational institution is the lowest among all the universities and colleges in Liberia.
Fearing street riots, the Sanniquelly police ordered the closure of nearby shops and other private establishments in the city for the duration of the action. They also called in the armed police from the regional center in Gbarnga to control the situation.
Liberia is known to be the poorest country in West Africa. The extremely low standard of living of Liberians, the lack of adequate medical care, problems with education are the most acute problems in the country.
