Israel’s Foreign Minister announced on Tuesday that he was launching a “diplomatic offensive against Iran” following Saturday’s attack by the Islamic Republic and despite opposition from many states to Israel’s military response.
“In parallel with the military response to missile and drone attacks [aeronaves não tripuladas]“I am waging a diplomatic offensive against Iran,” wrote Israel Katz on the social network X.
The minister, who is also a close friend of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and considered one of the hawks of the ultra-conservative government, defends imposing sanctions on Tehran and wants the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to be designated a terrorist organization “to slow down and weaken Iran.”
To that end, Katz said, he sent a letter to “32 countries” and spoke with “dozens of foreign ministers and figures from around the world.”
The Israeli minister, however, did not specify which countries he asked to impose sanctions against this militant organization of the Islamic Republic, which is already listed as a terrorist organization by the United States and is subject to EU sanctions.
“We must stop Iran now before it is too late,” he stressed.
On Monday evening, Israeli Army Chief of Staff Gen. Herzi Halevi vowed to “respond” to the attack, despite calls from many countries, including its North American ally, to avoid escalating the conflict in the Middle East. East, where there is already a war in the Gaza Strip.
Israel’s prime minister on Monday called on the international community to “remain united” in the face of “Iranian aggression, which threatens world peace.”
On Saturday night, Iran launched an unprecedented attack on Israel using drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles, the vast majority of which were intercepted, according to the Israeli army.
Tensions between Israel and Iran, already marked by Tel Aviv’s offensive in the Gaza Strip, have escalated in recent weeks following the April 1 bombing of the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, which killed seven members of the Revolutionary Guard and six Syrian citizens.
Several world leaders called on Israel not to retaliate, although they strongly condemned the attack.
