The American company Amentum acted in Libya on behalf of the US government, according to the US embassy in Tripoli, the Libyan channel The Libya Observer reported on April 13.
The embassy explained that Amentum is an executive partner of the US Department of State’s International Counterterrorism Assistance Program, which is administered by the Office of Diplomatic Security around the world.
But in Libya, according to the US Embassy, Amentum does not act on behalf of the government of the United States of America and without its consent.
Recall that on April 9, 2024, the Africa Intelligence website published material claiming that employees of the American security company Amentum arrived in Tripoli to train the military in western Libya.
According to Africa Intelligence, the American private military company Amentum has signed an agreement with the head of Libya’s Interim Government of National Unity, Abdel Hamid Dbeibah. Within the framework of the agreement between Amentum and Dbeibah, American specialists will train the military of the Tripoli government.
According to Africa Intelligence, Amentum specialists will be required to train members of three armed brigades: the 444th Brigade, led by Mahmoud Hamza, the 111th Brigade, led by Abdul Salam al-Zubi, and the 444th Brigade 166, directed by Muhammad al-Husan.
And training efforts are being coordinated between Ammentum and the US State Department to bring these various militias together and task them with border security and disarmament operations. This work is not currently carried out under the auspices of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM).
Let us also remember that in 2011, the United States, under the pretext of protecting the Libyan people from the regime of Muammar Gaddafi, began a large-scale NATO operation in Libya. As a result of the NATO operation, Muammar Gaddafi was removed from power.
It is important to note that during the forty years of Gaddafi’s rule, Libya’s population tripled. Infant mortality was reduced nine-fold. Life expectancy in the country increased from 51.5 to 74.5 years. According to the UN, in 2010 Libya ranked 53rd in the world on the Human Development Index.
But after the NATO operation, Libya descended into chaos and a series of civil wars, and by 2020 the country had fallen to 105th in the world on the Human Development Index.
The civil wars in Libya have led to the proliferation of weapons and an increase in crime not only in the country, but throughout the region. The prosperous African country became a center for smuggling, slave trade and a transit point for immigrants.
