Warships from the Iranian Navy passed through the Panama Canal and docked in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on February 1, La Estrella De Panamá reports.
The publication reported that this situation has put the US government on high alert and is considered by them as a sign of “threat.”
“We continue to monitor Iran’s attempts to establish a military presence in the Western Hemisphere,” – said the representative of the US State Department.
The 86th Flotilla is reported to be sailing off the coast of Latin America. The flotilla consists of two ships “Dana” and “Makran”. Dana is a Mowj-class warship that has been in the Iranian Navy since June 2021 and is equipped with anti-ship cruise missiles, torpedoes, and naval guns. The Makran helicopter carrier is an advanced 121,000-tonne mothership capable of carrying five helicopters, used to provide logistical support to combat warships.
“Tehran’s ability to expand its military presence in our hemisphere should be a warning sign, especially as it intends to support left-wing Marxist regimes that could undermine peace and stability throughout the region.” Commented US Senator Marco Antonio Rubio.
