Two environmental projects presented by Portuguese teams have been awarded the European Commission’s New European Bauhaus Awards 2024.
UrbanMYCOskin, project design integrated bio, it is proposed to use mycelium, an organism that decomposes organic matter, to build a sustainable tram stop in Martim Moniz Square in Lisbon.
The project of Luisa Rita Morais, Polish Natalia Pioretska and Chilean Jennifer Levy received 15 thousand euros in the Rising Stars section in the category “Formation of a closed industrial ecosystem and support for thinking about the life cycle.”
Hydroscape Lisbon, which proposes the creation of a 14-kilometer urban park on the site currently occupied by the Port of Lisbon, was awarded second place in the New European Bauhaus Awards Rising Stars category in the Reconnecting with Nature category.
The proposal by Julia Voulgari, an architecture student at Glasgow School of Art (Scotland), aims to redevelop the Lisbon landscape with an urban park along 14 kilometers of coastline, combining a water treatment center and a public bath.
The project, which received a prize of 15 thousand euros, is based on collecting water from the Tagus Valley so that the urban park promotes sustainable mobility, a cycling network, public transport and places for walking.
The New European Bauhaus Prize, launched four years ago, aims to identify environmental, economic and cultural projects that combine sustainability, accessibility and investment to create a framework for climate change and cultural change in line with the European Green Pact.
In the 2024 edition, 20 awards were presented to winners in the categories of reconnecting with nature, restoring a sense of belonging, prioritizing action for places and people in need, and fostering a closed industrial ecosystem, including a special prize for redevelopment projects. Ukraine.
The ceremony in Brussels took place last Friday and was chaired by Elisa Ferreira, Commissioner for Cohesion and Reform, and Iliana. Ivanova, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, and Vsevolod Chentsov, Ambassador of Ukraine to the European Union, was also present.
