Tourists of different nationalities contribute an average of 4,500 euros – a small fortune – to the Trevi Fountain in Rome every day in exchange for many unfulfilled desires. Few people know the fate of the coins thrown into the water of the fountain, which is one of the most romantic and visited monuments of the Italian capital along with the Colosseum.
Legend has it that by throwing three coins with your right hand over your left shoulder, you increase your chances of not only returning to Rome, but also of finding great love or even getting married. Euros, dollars, pounds and yen are the most commonly used currencies, but you can also find medals of saints or Pope Francis, padlocks, rings, bracelets or sunglasses.
Let’s sum it up and separate the euro from foreign ones
“In 2022, we collected more than 33 thousand kilograms of coins, corresponding to 1,432,953.74 euros, the highest value since we managed this fund,” he told the Spanish newspaper. ABCGiustino Trincia, director of Caritas in Rome, adds that last year they broke this record, reaching 1.6 million euros. The money is intended, among other things, to feed more than two thousand needy families and help people with Alzheimer’s disease.
