Indonesia closed Manado airport and evacuated hundreds of people from the area around the Ruang volcano after it spewed lava, rocks and ash for days, according to authorities and Reuters. According to authorities, maximum preparedness has been declared for the situation and the risk of a tsunami if parts of the volcano fall into the ocean.
Air Asia also canceled flights to nine airports in East Malaysia and Brunei after aviation authorities warned of a security threat.
According to the same source, more than 800 people were evacuated from the area. “We are running because the ash is getting closer,” says an eyewitness.
Authorities say there are reports that rocks and ash damaged several homes and led to the evacuation of a hospital. They explain that they have isolated an area of six kilometers around the volcano and are evacuating more residents, including from Tagulandang Island.
About 12 thousand people could be affected by the volcanic eruption.
