A conference on Palestine by French left-wing leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon, planned for this Thursday in northern France, was banned by authorities citing the risk of “disturbing public order.”
According to the prefecture of Nord, “calls for mobilization made by various organizations” during the conference in the city of Lille could lead to “assemblies, crowds and clashes on public roads in an environment of increased geopolitical tensions.”
The department recalled that on Thursday security forces were heavily mobilized for the Lille-Aston Villa Europa League game and for celebrations at the Lille synagogue, all at a time when the terrorist threat led to the Vigipirate anti-terrorism alert system being raised to maximum level at the end of March.
