A 17-year-old Spanish gymnast who represented the country at the last trampoline world championships died of meningitis early on Thursday, El País reported.
This was announced by the city council of Cabanillas del Campo, where Maria Herrance lived.
In a statement, the municipality said the young woman died “suddenly in just 24 hours” due to meningitis, regretting the incident. The municipality declared two days of mourning and canceled all social and cultural events.
The Spanish Gymnastics Federation also expressed regret over the death of the athlete.
“Spanish gymnastics will always remember you,” he explained, expressing his condolences to Maria’s family and friends.
The trampoline gymnast represented Spain at the championships held last December and finished 26th in the event.
