UN Secretary-General António Guterres this Thursday considered the impact of Israel’s commitments to increase aid to Gaza to be “limited and sometimes nil”, stressing that Israeli military operations have created a “humanitarian hellish scenario”.
During a ministerial debate at the United Nations Security Council (UN) on the situation in the Middle East, with a focus on the Gaza Strip, Guterres took stock of six and a half months of Israeli military operations in the enclave, emphasizing that two million Palestinians “have experienced death, destruction and denial of vital humanitarian aid” and are now facing famine.
“All this comes against the backdrop of severe restrictions imposed by the Israeli authorities on the delivery of humanitarian aid to people in the Gaza Strip, who are suffering from widespread hunger,” he said.
Guterres also defended “the end of the occupation” and “the creation of a fully independent Palestinian state,” stressing that the international community has a “responsibility and moral obligation to help” in this regard. The UN Secretary-General once again defended a two-state solution, in which “Israel and Palestine live side by side in peace and security, with Jerusalem as the capital of both states,” based on the organization’s own resolutions, international law and previous agreements.
According to Guterres, this is a critical prerequisite for reducing tensions in the region and beyond.
