Indian authorities confirmed this Thursday the release of the Indian crew member of the Portuguese-flagged MSC Aries, seized last week by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, who has now arrived in Indian territory.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that the woman, identified as Anne Tessa Joseph, arrived at the Indian city of Cochin airport after “concerted efforts by the Indian mission in Tehran and the Iranian government.”
“The Indian mission in Tehran remains involved in the matter and is in contact with the other 16 Indian crew members on the ship,” Indian diplomats said, adding that all were “healthy and in touch with their families in India.”
Indian authorities also said that “they are also in contact with Iran to ensure the well-being of the rest of the MSC Aries crew” and also confirmed a conversation on this topic between Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and his Iranian counterpart. , Hossein Amirabdolakhyan.
The statement came a day after the company that operates the ship said the 25 crew members were safe and said talks were underway with Iranian authorities to try to secure their release.
The Portuguese-flagged ship was seized on Saturday by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, which said it was linked to the Zodiac group, owned by Israeli millionaire Eyal Ofer.
Portugal summoned Iran’s ambassador in Lisbon on Tuesday to protest recent attacks on Israel and demand the “immediate release” of MSC Aries.
