Wars and migrant drama are reflected in World Press Photo selections. View photos

Photojournalist from Reuters news agency Mohammed Salem won this year’s prestigious World Press Photo award for his photograph of a Palestinian woman hugging the body of her five-year-old niece in the Gaza Strip. The photo was taken on October 17 last year at Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis in South Gaza, where families were searching for relatives killed during Israeli bombing in the Palestinian enclave. Inas Abu Maamar, 36, sobs as she holds Sali’s body, covered with a sheet, in the hospital morgue. This is the second time Salem has won the top prize, and for the same theme.

In addition, the winning photographs for the 2024 competition, announced on Wednesday, reflect some of the major themes that marked the past year: wars (in Ukraine and the Middle East) and the plight of migrants around the world, families and dementia.
