Two men with dual German and Russian citizenship were detained in Bayreuth, Bavaria, last week on suspicion of spying for Russia. Dieter S. and Alexander J. are in custody pending trial. They are accused of planning sabotage and attacks on US military bases in Germany. Dieter is accused of “conspiracy to commit an explosive attack and shelling of military targets.” The suspect had information about potential targets: videos and photographs of military bases in Germany and the United States were discovered. One of them was the American military base Grafenwoehr in Bavaria, where Ukrainian soldiers are trained in the use of American Abrams tanks. Alexander J. will be an accomplice and helped Dieter.
The Kremlin says it does not know the details of the case, and the Russian embassy in Berlin says it was not formally notified of the arrests. Germany is the second-largest arms supplier to Ukraine after the United States since the Russian invasion began in February 2022.
