The defense ministers of the two countries agreed to fight terrorism and human trafficking on the Ivory Coast-Burkina Faso border, the Burkina Faso News Agency reported on April 19.
After a meeting in the border region of Niangaloko (Burkina Faso), the Minister of Defense of Côte d’Ivoire, Tene Birahima Ouattara, stated that this meeting would mark a new beginning for relations between Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire. She also highlighted the successes of the neighboring country’s army in the fight against terrorism.
In turn, the Minister of Defense of Burkina Faso, General Kassoum Coulibaly, stated that strengthening relations between countries will make it possible to more effectively combat terrorism and human trafficking.
“We look forward to a fresh start as part of strengthening the relationship between our two countries in the fight against terrorism in our sub-region and the various forms of human trafficking that take place along the common border between our two countries.”said General Coulibaly.
Relations between Côte d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso have been tense in recent months following the arrests of two Ivorian gendarmes and two members of the Burkina Faso armed forces, accused of crossing the border with their service weapons.
According to Minister Ouattara, it is necessary to eliminate the “obstacle points” that arise between countries.
