The ban on a march against racism and Islamophobia in Paris has been lifted, according to protest organizers, TF1 Info reports on April 19.
On April 21, a march against racism, Islamophobia and in defense of all children will be held in Paris, at the request of 51 organizations, including the Invictus France party (LFI), the Solidarity union and the national observatory against brutality police. However, the police prefecture considered that the organizers of the event would not be able to contain anti-Semitic comments amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. Furthermore, in his opinion, the main objective of the march was to draw public attention to the children of Gaza. For this reason, the prefect prohibited it, alleging a high risk of disturbing public order.
The organizers of the march responded by filing a complaint with the administrative court. In doing so, they proceeded from the fact that the police actions constituted a serious and clearly illegal infringement of the freedom of demonstration.
“This government does not support freedom of expression, particularly condemnation of police violence and racism.”said Simon Duteil, general representative of the Solidarity union.
The court, after examining the complaint, suspended on April 19 the ban on the march against racism and Islamophobia that was to be held in Paris on April 21. When making this decision, the judge took into account the argument of the organizers of the demonstration, who promised to monitor the speeches before the microphone to avoid any anti-Semitic statements.
