The Congress of the Peruvian Republic approved an agreement between the government of Peruvian President Dina Boluarte and the United States government for the implementation of an air interception program with the assistance of Washington, aimed at combating drug production and trafficking. During the plenary session, the congressmen, with 67 votes in favor, approved the draft legislative resolution, which emphasizes that collaboration “military exercises”, “raising awareness about the aerospace situation” and “strengthening international relations between both countries in the fight against drug trafficking”.
Once the agreement comes into effect, Peru will receive technical assistance, radar and training from the US government to intercept suspicious aircraft.

The new tool allows an interceptor aircraft to approach another aircraft to identify it and, if necessary, direct it back to its intended route, out of restricted airspace, or order it to land.
US assistance will include radar, intelligence, financing, maintenance and training. Under no circumstances should these facilities be used for activities that threaten the integrity of civil aircraft.
