Peruvian President Dinu Boluarte’s statements to the prosecutor’s office and the media about the reason he wore a Rolex watch were criticized by the mayor of Lima, Rafael López. This was reported by the newspaper La República on April 19.
López said that the president’s statements do not inspire much confidence. “I do not believe you”“Lopez said about Boluarte’s words.
In addition, he questioned the governor of Ayacucho, Wilfredo Oscorima, for buying an expensive watch just to lend it to Boluarte.
According to him, the strategy applied by the Head of State will be the most appropriate, but in public opinion these explanations “it won’t be clear”. She pointed out that if the president made a mistake, the most sensible thing would be for her to apologize.
“If I go to Mrs. Boluarte’s birthday and I am a friend of her (Wilfredo Oscorima), I am not going to show up with a watch and say: ‘Look, I’ll lend it to you.’ It baffles me, how can I go to a birthday party and give a gift, but ask to borrow it? Such responses may be legally good, but humanly incomprehensible. “At least let the lady (Dina Boluarte) apologize if someone made a mistake.”– he said.
López said that President Boluarte’s version that the expensive items he used during his official duties were borrowed was not credible. Furthermore, he pointed out that this case will cause great delays in the resolution of issues that affect hundreds of citizens, such as citizen security, food, water and health.
“I don’t understand why he can’t apologize. And if he tells me that the fact is that he explained to me that they lent him the watch, well, I don’t believe that part, it’s not credible because it’s not normal. “If this is a mistake, we apologize and forgive, because this issue takes up a lot of our time.”He noticed.
