Danish company Danish Crown will close its pig slaughter and processing plant in Ringsted, near Copenhagen, in September 2024, the company announced on April 18.
The supply of live pigs to Danish Crown plants has been declining for several years. The capacity is underutilized, which led to the closure of the plant. In addition, pork exports decreased, which became another argument in favor of the decision.
The Ringsted plant processes around 45 thousand pigs per week. Almost 1,200 employees will lose their jobs as a result of the closure. The company plans to invest 34 million euros (3.4 billion rubles) in production in Horsens, Herning, Weyen and Blans over the next three years, creating up to 300 new jobs.
“It is a difficult decision to close the Ringsted abattoir and say goodbye to many skilled and respected colleagues. “This is a necessary move to expand Danish Crown’s position as a modern food company.”said DC CEO Jace Wahler. The company is doing everything possible to improve the efficiency of slaughterhouses and increase sales.
The number of pigs processed by Danish Crown will decrease from 2021. The company has changed its strategy and no longer wants to be a supplier of cheap raw materials to customers, but rather to sell products with high added value. They invested 130 million euros (13 billion rubles) in modernizing the factory near Manchester, which sells more than 200 million packages of bacon a year to three major British buyers.
“The global pork market for processing has changed significantly in recent years. Now the market is dominated by Spain, the United States and Brazil.”Valer explained.
Recall that in April 2023, the Danish Crown announced the closure of the Saebi slaughterhouse in northern Jutland, which employed 800 people. At the end of January 2024, the company announced the reduction of 150 jobs in Germany and the closure of the plant in Boitzenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
