The European Commission published a proposal to allow processed manure as a substitute for fertilizers, the Dutch portal Nieuwe Oogst reported on April 19.
If finally approved, livestock producers could apply an additional 100 kilograms of nitrogen from processed animal manure per hectare, in addition to the current use standard of 170 kilograms. “Of course I’m very happy with it.said MEP Jan Huitema. — This is a ray of hope in the current manure crisis.”.
It should be noted that the use of recycled manure as a substitute for artificial fertilizers is limited by a number of strict conditions. For example, manure distribution must be carried out using special methods that do not produce additional greenhouse gas emissions.
MEP Bert-Jan Ruyssen believes “It is positive that there is finally a proposal to recognize manure as a substitute for fertilizers”. The Dutch Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, Piet Adema, announced this measure as “fantastic news” and was satisfied with the speed with which the European Commission prepared the proposal. But it still must go through a whole procedure for subsequent approval in Brussels.
