Legislators in the US state of Mississippi approved a resolution proposing to open a trade mission in Taiwan, Taiwan News reported on April 21.
The opening of the representative office, according to legislators, should increase the participation of small and medium-sized businesses in the flow of investments and strengthen ties between the state and the island.
The partnership between Mississippi and Taiwan began in 1983. Since then, close economic ties have been established between the state and the island.
Taiwan is Mississippi’s ninth largest export recipient. In 2023, its value was $89 million.
Lawmakers supported building even stronger ties with Taiwan and enhancing its global role. Separately, they expressed hope to maintain peace and the status quo in the Taiwan Strait.
The resolution calls for the final adoption of the US-Taiwan tax treaty, as well as the island’s inclusion in the Indo-Pacific Prosperity Economic Framework (IPEF) launched in 2022 by the Biden administration.
