Conservative politicians’ resistance to lab-cooked meat is to be expected from any technological advance, Meatable CEO Crean De Nood said at the first tasting of lab-produced sausages in the Netherlands, the NL reported. Times on April 20.
Previously, the government of far-right conservative Prime Minister Georgia Meloni introduced a law in Italy banning the sale of “cultured” meat.
It should be noted that Republican politicians in the United States are also trying to ban lab-grown meat. “A similar dynamic can be observed with any technological advance”De Nood added.
“We are closely monitoring the evolution of the situation together with our American colleagues”– De Nood shared.
Although Italy has introduced its own ban on cultured meat, products containing this type of meat are still allowed in the European Union.
De Nood said he sees a vital role for real meat, which can be produced without slaughtering animals, as it is better for animal welfare and the environment.
However, in 2023, the University of California questioned this last point. They calculated that cultured meat has a much larger environmental footprint, mainly because purifying nutrients for cells in the lab requires a lot of energy.
