The CDS-PP will meet its National Council on Monday evening in Lisbon to confirm the party’s candidates who will join the Democratic Alliance (AD) list for the European elections on June 9.
According to a message sent today to national councilors, to which Lusa had access, the party’s highest body between congresses will meet at 21:00 at the national headquarters of the CDS-PP, in Largo Adelino Amaro da Costa, in Lisbon.
The agenda includes the approval of the party’s candidates for inclusion in the list of the Democratic Alliance – a coalition uniting PSD, SDS-PP and PPM – as well as approval of “a change in the name of the Electoral Coalition for the Elections.” to the European Parliament in the “AD – Democratic Alliance”, following similarities with the designation with the ADN in the March legislative elections.
According to several sources Lusa has consulted, the CDS is expected to list a fourth name on the AD list, which is likely to be a woman.
The new body, elected today at the 31st Congress, which took place in Viseu, will also elect a Deputy Secretary General and will present, discuss and vote on the Jurisdiction and Discipline Regulations of the CDS-PP.
This extraordinary meeting has already been convened by the new President of the National Council, Luis Cairo.
The PSD, a coalition partner, will meet with its National Council on the same day and at the same time to approve the list of candidates and change the name of the coalition.
In January, the SDS, CDS-PP and PPM signed a coalition agreement for legislative elections on March 10 and European elections on June 9 “with the aim of offering Portugal the necessary political changes and an ambitious, reformist, moderate government, stable and majority.”
On the day of the legislative elections, the AD coalition (which appeared on the ballot as the Democratic Alliance and with the acronyms of its member parties) called on the National Electoral Commission to issue a message warning of the similarity of the name with the Alternative Democratic National (ADN) on the ballot, but to no avail.
The CDS-PP currently has one MEP, a position until March held by President Nuno Melo, who is now Minister of National Defense.
According to the General Secretariat of the Ministry of the Interior (SGMAI), in the last European elections, centrists ran on their own lists and received 6.19% of the votes, corresponding to 205,111 ballots.
