Atomflot signed a contract for the construction of two new nuclear-powered icebreakers

Atomflot signed a contract for the construction of two new nuclear-powered icebreakers

The contract for the construction of the fifth and sixth serial universal nuclear icebreakers of project 22220 was signed by Atomflot and Baltiysky Zavod JSC. Information about it was published on the company’s official website on February 3.

“The continuation of the construction of a series of universal nuclear icebreakers is a key element in the comprehensive development of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation. Despite external factors, we are implementing a plan to increase cargo transportation in the waters of the Northern Sea Route.”, and said. o General Director of FSUE Atomflot Leonid Irlitsa.

He stressed that modern nuclear-powered icebreakers are the basis for successful projects in the Arctic.

And about The general director of FSUE Atomflot noted that the construction and financing of the fifth and sixth series universal nuclear icebreakers will be carried out in a proportion of 50 to 50 of the federal budget and at the expense of Atomflot.

According to the terms of the contract, the commissioning of the fifth serial nuclear-powered universal icebreaker is scheduled for December 2028, and the sixth – for December 2030.

Remember that Defense News earlier stated that Russia managed to maintain its position in the Arctic, and that the West was slow to protect its interests in this region. The publication pointed out that even if the West manages to create Arctic drones, on which it has bet in the fight for presence in the region, this will not be enough to gain positions in the Arctic, since icebreakers and manned stations are also required for this.
