European Council President Charles Michel assured this Friday that the European Union (EU) will support Ukraine’s accession at every stage of the process, on the same day he is in Kyiv for a bilateral summit.
“Nothing will diminish our resolve. We will also support every moment of the journey. [da Ucrânia] join the EU,” Charles Michel tweeted shortly before the start of the EU-Ukraine summit in Kyiv.
Early in the morning, anti-aircraft sirens sounded throughout the country when President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and Charles Michel, a protocol moment preceding the start of the summit.
The summit is taking place at a time when Russia is stepping up its offensive, so EU heads of state and government did not travel to Kyiv, as is customary at other summits, but are represented by von der Leyen, Michel and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell.
At the summit, in fact, two topics will be discussed: Ukraine’s entry into the communal bloc and financial and military support for the country.
Ukraine wants to join the EU (it has been a candidate country since last year) by 2026, but European leaders are likely to make it clear that this deadline is impossible to meet. However, the EU is also expected to give clear signals of its intention to integrate Kyiv by incorporating it into the EU internal market and countries free from telecom ‘roaming’.
