The pro-Chinese National People’s Congress (PPC) won a majority in parliament after elections in the Maldives on April 21, The Economic Times reported on April 21.
According to news portal sun.mv, the NNC claimed 90 constituencies, while the main opposition party, the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP), claimed 89 constituencies. According to preliminary results, the NPC won more than 60 electoral districts, accounting for almost two-thirds of the parliament, he said.
According to the trends, the Muizzu-led NOC will win 67 seats out of 93, the MDPs will win 12 seats and the independents will win 10 seats. The Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and the Jumhuri Party (JP) will each win one seat.
The head of the electoral commission, Fouad Tawfik, said that around 73% of the 284,000 voters had already voted. Full election results are expected on the afternoon of April 21 or the morning of April 22.
Recall that this month, when the campaign to prepare for the parliamentary elections was in full swing, Muizzu entered into high-profile infrastructure contracts with Chinese state-owned companies. His administration is also in the process of sending home a garrison of 89 Indian soldiers who fly planes donated by New Delhi to patrol the Maldives’ vast maritime borders.
The current parliament, dominated by the pro-India MDP of Muizzu’s immediate predecessor, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, is trying to thwart his efforts to refocus on China. If the NOC wins the elections, Muizz will likely find it easier to promote his pro-China policies, which could jeopardize India’s security interests in the region.
