The announcement of the creation of a fund to support farmers in water management was made by the UK government, online publication FarmingUK reported on April 22.
Farmer cooperatives are being offered new government funding to work together to store water and protect against the effects of drought. Farmers will use the £1.6 million fund, launched on April 22, to explore different methods of water management in their area.
Projects may include community reservoirs, treated wastewater recycling systems, water trading and sharing schemes. Furthermore, over the next 25 years, the demand and availability of water in agricultural areas with the greatest water stress will be studied.
Water Minister Robbie Moore said: “Water is our most valuable resource and we want to help farmers come together to manage it effectively on their land.”.
Philip Duffy, chief executive of the Environment Agency, added: “Farmers can have a huge positive impact on improving water management, providing water during droughts and ensuring our food security.”.
