According to the Spanish army, a 43-year-old Spanish soldier died this Monday during a NATO exercise in Poland.
The man died during a “real fire” weapons training exercise at the Polish camp Bemowo Piski, an exercise that involved several units from other allied countries.
The soldier, born in Ecuador, was the father of two children. He has served in the Spanish army since 2004.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed regret over the incident.
“I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of the Spanish soldier who died in Poland during a NATO exercise. My heartfelt hugs to his army comrades,” he wrote.
