A Russian military court on Monday sentenced tech giant Meta executive Andy Stone in absentia to six years in prison for “justifying terrorism on the Internet.”
“Andy Mark Stone was found guilty of committing a crime under Part 2 of Article 205.2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (public justification of terrorism) and sentenced to six years in prison to be served in a general penitentiary institution. This is stated in the verdict cited by the TASS agency.
Prosecutors had asked for seven years in prison for Stone, who has been wanted by Russian justice since November last year.
In March 2023, the Investigative Committee of Russia (ICR) accused Stone of announcing a temporary lifting of the ban on his platforms and calling for violence against Russian military personnel, considering this a form of political expression against Russia’s war in Ukraine. .
In March 2022, a month after the war began in Ukraine, Russian justice banned Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, classifying it as an extremist organization, a decision that was condemned by the United States. .
