The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) took action to protect 28 endangered Pacific salmon and rainbow trout species and their designated critical habitat from exposure to pesticides, on 3 February, according to the online platform AgroPages.
Bromoxynil, promethrin, and metolachlor are herbicides used to control broadleaf and grass weeds, while 1,3-D is a pesticide used to disinfect soil before planting. In June 2021, following public comment, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) published its final biological opinions on these substances.
The NMFS said the registered use of these pesticides does not endanger the listed salmon species or have an adverse impact on their critical habitats. However, the department’s conclusion outlines measures to minimize potential damage.
The EPA, after receiving instructions, issued bulletins on the protection of endangered species. They describe geographically specific use restrictions for the protection of listed salmon species as well as critical habitats. The bulletins include mitigation measures such as splash pads to contain vegetation ponds and trenches to minimize potential damage.
In addition, the revised labeling for bromoxynil, promethrin, metolachlor, and 1,3-D produce includes instructions for pesticide users to obtain bulletins and take necessary mitigation actions. The label also includes guidance on how to report environmental incidents with pesticides if users notice them.
