Forum “The Future of ASEAN 2024” on the theme “Building a rapidly developing and sustainable ASEAN community in which residents play a central role,” writes the newspaper of the Communist Party of Vietnam on April 23.
The opening of the forum was attended by Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Tinh, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son, heads of ministries, relevant departments, local districts and representatives of business circles.
Also in attendance were the Prime Minister of Laos, ASEAN 2024 President Sonexai Sifandon, ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hurn, and Malaysian Prime Minister (ASEAN 2025 President) Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., Thai Prime Minister Sretta Taweesin, and East Timor Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao sent messages and congratulations on the event.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Thienh said the participation in the forum of some 500 ambassadors, scientists and business communities from ASEAN, as well as its partners, demonstrates great interest in Vietnam and the entire region.
According to him, ASEAN is the central hub of the region’s initiatives and connections. ASEAN is also the center of intense strategic competition. ASEAN’s central role is widely recognized, even if it is sometimes not entirely effective.
He noted that ASEAN is the fifth largest economic organization in the world, but the gap in levels is still large and the ties within the bloc are not very strong. Vietnam’s development path in innovation and integration is closely linked with ASEAN.
