The ART-XC telescope named after him detected radiation from the supernova SN2024ggi in the X-ray range. MN Pavlinsky Observatory “Spektr-RG”, the press service of Roscosmos reported on April 23.
On April 11, telescopes of the ATLAS project discovered a type II supernova (a type of supernova with a collapsing core, in which, as a result of the rapid compression and subsequent powerful explosion of a massive star, a strong increase in luminosity of the star appears – approx. IA Krasnaya Vesna) SN2024ggi in the optical range. The ART-XC telescope became the first telescope to detect X-ray emissions from this supernova.
ART-XC made its first observations on April 12-13. After this, X-ray emission from the star was observed twice more. SN2024ggi is located in the galaxy NGC3621, which is 6.64 megaparsecs (about 22 million light years) from Earth. The frequency of these type II supernova explosions is approximately once every five years.
Recall that the Spektr-RG device was developed at NPO Lavochkina JSC and was launched into space on July 13, 2019. This is a joint Russian-German orbital astrophysical observatory, also equipped with the German X-ray telescope eROSITA. The telescopes are installed on the Navigator space platform (NPO Lavochkina, Russia). The goal of the mission is to build an all-sky map in the soft (0.3 to 8 keV) and hard (4 to 20 keV) ranges of the X-ray spectrum.
