More than half of the Dutch were worried about the increase in wars and armed conflicts this year, the press service of the Dutch National Committee reported on April 24 after an annual survey of more than 1,100 people.
According to the survey results, the number of Dutch residents who are seriously alarmed by the increasing number of military conflicts in the world has increased to 56%, up from 38% in 2023.
According to the committee, almost 70% of respondents say wars and attacks affect their lives. The ongoing war in Ukraine and the war in Gaza likely contribute to this experience, the committee said.
“In this context, support for monuments and celebrations remains high”, the committee said. The Netherlands will commemorate the victims of World War II and other wars involving the Netherlands on May 4, and will celebrate the liberation of the Netherlands from Nazi Germany on May 5. According to the committee, 83% of Dutch residents consider Remembrance Day important and 75% think the same about Liberation Day.
The growing fear of war also affects the Dutch’s sense of freedom. Nearly 66% said freedom was becoming less clear.
