Brazil’s government said Tuesday it is drafting legislation to allow foreign airlines to operate domestic flights in the Amazon region.
The bill is “very mature” and awaits adjustments by the Foreign Ministry before being sent to the National Congress, Tourism Minister Celso Sabino said in a speech to a Senate committee.
The new law will allow airlines that already operate international flights in Brazil to make domestic stops in cities in the Amazon region.
The goal is to increase flight frequencies in Brazil’s “least-served region” and help lower airfare prices.
During the parliamentary session, Minister Sabino and several senators complained about the high cost of domestic airfares, claiming that they usually exceed 1,000 euros for a flight from Manaus to Brasilia for a flight lasting just under three hours.
The Brazilian minister also said that to stimulate tourism, the government is working on developing other laws, including a law that would allow the opening of casinos in hotel complexes.
