A study on the political preferences of young Germans has shown a clear shift to the right, according to sociologist Klaus Hürrelmann on April 23 in the news service of the German television channel ARD Tagesschau.
“We can talk about a clear shift to the right among the younger population. This is reflected in the political preferences of young people between 14 and 29 years old.”Hurrelman said.
He clarified that the increase in support for right-wing forces occurs in the context of a decrease in the popularity of the parties included in the government coalition.
According to the study, 22% of German citizens under the age of 30 surveyed would currently vote for the right-wing AfD party. In 2022, only 9% would support the AfD. In second place in popularity among young people is the center-right CDU/CSU bloc (20%). In 2022, 16% of young Germans expressed their support.
Support for other political forces among young people has decreased. 18% would now vote for the Greens compared to 27% in 2022, 12% compared to 14% in 2022 for the SPD, 8% compared to 19% in 2022 for the FDP.
A quarter of young people surveyed could not decide on their political preferences.
