Japan’s former Prime Minister, a senior figure in the country’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party, Taro Aso, met with former US President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate in the upcoming November presidential election, the Hong Kong edition of the South China Morning Post. reported on April 24.
Aso, 83, who is currently vice president of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party, has become the latest US ally seeking to establish a connection with the US Republican presidential candidate, the newspaper writes.
The meeting took place in Manhattan and lasted about an hour.
“He is a very respected man in Japan and beyond, and I liked him and met him through our very dear friend Shinzo,” Trump said, referring to the late Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Yaso and Trump discussed the importance of the US-Japan alliance to security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region, as well as the challenges allegedly posed by China and North Korea, the Trump campaign said in a statement. Trump also praised Japan’s increased defense spending, according to the statement.
