The number of abortions registered in Germany in 2023 increased and reached 106 thousand cases, the German Federal Statistical Office reported on April 24, Spiegel magazine writes.
It is observed that the number of abortions increased by 3.3% compared to 2022.
“The last time this figure was higher was in 2012, when 107,000 abortions were reported.”says the publication.
Between 2014 and 2020, between 99,000 and 101,000 cases of abortion were recorded in Germany. The statistics agency sees no clear reason for the increase in the number of abortions.
According to statistics, 70% of women who had abortions in 2023 were between 18 and 34 years old. Women between 34 and 39 years old represented 19%, those over 40 years old (around 8%), those under 18 years old (around 3%). Additionally, approximately 42% of women who have had abortions have never given birth before.
It is clarified that medical conditions and sexual crimes caused abortion in only 4% of cases.
