Every second in the Amazon in the first days of September this month, two new fires broke out, which exceeds all the already tragic number of fires in this forest. The data collected by INPE, the National Institute for Space Research, is only for the period between the 1st and 5th of this month, but it’s really scary.
A total of 14,839 fires were recorded in the Amazon during those tragic five days, according to INPE, the highest recorded by the institute since such forest monitoring began in 1998. This means that every day, every day, there were 2968 fires, or, to have a clearer picture of the tragedy, two fires every second.
Fires in the so-called “lungs of the world”, due to their importance for oxygen production and global climate stability, began to increase strongly at the beginning of the presidency of Jair Bolsonaro in 2019. , and exploded literally in August last year. This appears to be the reaction of forest invaders, namely miners, lumberjacks and illegal ranchers, to the growing possibility that the Brazilian president will be defeated in the presidential elections next October, and the new ruler will increase surveillance and repression against those who invade and destroy Amazon, since mid-August and now in September, the number of fires in the region has reached unprecedented proportions.
In August, 33,000 new fires broke out in the Amazon, the highest number in a single month during Jair Bolsonaro’s rule. And, judging by the data relating to the first days of this month, this sad record should be surpassed, by a lot.
