Russia vetoed the resolution on the non-placement of nuclear weapons in space on April 24 during a meeting of the UN Security Council (SC).
The resolution was prepared by the United States and Japan. Russia and China proposed an amendment: “Take urgent measures to permanently prevent the deployment of weapons in outer space and threats to use force in space, from space to Earth and from Earth to objects in outer space.”.
Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, stressed that Russia wants to achieve a ban on the placement of any weapons in space, not only weapons of mass destruction.
However, the amendment by the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China was not accepted. As a result, Russia voted against the resolution. China abstained from voting. 13 participants voted to approve the document.
Recall that on April 25, the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, announced that Russia would present its draft resolution on the prohibition of the placement of weapons in space.
