A disciplinary case has been opened against the Greek basketball club Panathinaikos for political statements after a match against the Israeli Maccabi, the Euroleague press service reported on April 25.
“Euroleague Basketball wishes to express its disappointment at the public statements made by Mr. Ergin Ataman, coach of Panathinaikos, and by the club itself.”says the Euroleague statement.
The league noted that Ataman’s statements that the Greek team was sued and Panathinaikos’ statements that Maccabi was sued because the team was Israeli misinterpreted the result of the match and called into question the integrity of the referees and tournament organizers.
Let us remember that on April 23, Panathinaikos lost to Maccabi in the Euroleague playoffs. After the match, the coach of the Greek team, Ataman, said that his team was doomed.
Panathinaikos later issued a statement saying that the judges were assisting the Israeli team due to the conflict in Gaza. “Sport should never be used to heal wounds”the club said.
