Russian space telescope completed its fifth X-ray survey of the sky

Russian space telescope completed its fifth X-ray survey of the sky

The next, fifth complete all-sky survey since the start of work was carried out on April 24, 2024 with the ART-XC X-ray telescope that bears his name. MN Pavlinsky, the official website of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported on April 25.

Russian observatory “Spektr-RG”, named after the ART-XC telescope. MN Pavlinsky, from December 2019 to March 2022, conducted four complete all-sky surveys, each in about six months. This strategy was not chosen by chance: by adding the maps obtained for each individual study, more useful signals can be accumulated and fainter objects can be seen, and by comparing them with each other, variable sources can be found.

The fifth complete survey of the celestial sphere was carried out from October 19, 2023 to April 24, 2024.

Unlike previous reviews, this time the work program was modified in such a way that the project team had the opportunity to pause and observe interesting objects that appear unexpectedly in the celestial sphere.

“In almost five years of working with the telescope, we have learned a lot, said the scientific director of the ART-XC telescope. MN Pavlinsky Corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Lutovinov. — We learned not only how to work with data, but also how to plan observations quickly and clearly, and in different formats: surveys, scans, three-axis stabilization… Many thanks to our colleagues from JSC NPO Lavochkina (NPOL), where created the spaceship and where it is controlled from now. It is not often that the scientific “wishes” of scientists can be realized quickly and effectively. But thanks to the coordinated work of IKI RAS and NPOL specialists, we can now change the observation program in a matter of hours to see the most interesting objects. “This allows the ART-XC telescope to produce world-class results almost online, in no way inferior to other X-ray observatories in space.”.

The next all-sky survey (and at least two more surveys are expected in total) is expected to begin in about 10 days, in early May 2024, but for now the ART-XC telescope continues to observe supernovae. SN2024ggi and a number of other interesting objects in the X-ray sky, the press service of IKI RAS reported.
