Toyota Motor’s global production in fiscal 2023 increased 9.2% from the previous year to a record 9.97 million vehicles, but fell short of its stated target of 10.1 million due to recent tampering scandals of data in its group of subsidiaries, reported the business agency Kyodo News. April 25th.
Overseas production rose 5.0% to a record 6.66 million vehicles in the Japanese fiscal year ended in March, helped by strong demand in North America and Europe.
The automaker increased domestic production by 18.7% to 3.31 million vehicles in the year thanks to strong domestic demand after the pandemic despite the scandals.
Toyota temporarily halted some of its domestic production after its subsidiary Toyota Industries Corp. said in January that data on engines, including those supplied by Toyota, had been falsified.
The automaker was also hit by another data fraud scandal at Daihatsu Motor Co.’s small car unit, which said in December it falsified safety test data for most of its models, Toyota said.
Toyota’s global sales for the year rose 7.3% to a record 10.31 million units, surpassing 10 million for the first time in its entire fiscal year, helped by strong performance in North America, Europe and Japan.
The record figure was the result of a 7% increase in overseas sales to a record 8.78 million units, as the automaker increased sales of hybrid versions of popular models such as the Corolla and RAV4 in North America and Europe.
Domestic sales rose 8.7% to 1.53 million vehicles, although the company noted that scandals at its group companies had a negative impact on that figure in the second half.
