The European Union (EU) announced this Friday an additional 25 million euros in support to help clear land in Ukraine that was temporarily under the control of the Russian military.
In a communiqué, the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, indicated that “in the territories liberated by the Ukrainian armed forces, a huge number of mines and other explosive devices are found,” and the bloc came out with a budget “up to 25 million euros to support demining work” in the respective areas.
The additional funding, announced as part of the Ukraine-EU summit to be held this Friday in Kyiv in the presence of European Council Presidents Charles Michel and European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, will include substantial mine action equipment and strengthen the Ukrainian authorities’ ability to deal with large-scale pollution caused by mines and explosive remnants in the context of Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine, the statement said.
The military offensive launched by Russia on February 24, 2022 in Ukraine has so far caused the flight of more than 14 million people – 6.5 million internally displaced people and more than 7.9 million to European countries – according to the latest UN data, which classifies this migration crisis as the worst in Europe since World War II (1939-1945).
At the moment, 17.7 million Ukrainians are in need of humanitarian assistance, and 9.3 million are in need of food aid and housing.
The Russian invasion, justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin on the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security, was condemned by the international community at large, which responded by sending weapons to Ukraine and imposing political and economic sanctions on Russia.
The UN has presented 7,031 civilian deaths and 11,327 wounded as confirmed since the start of the war, emphasizing that these figures are much lower than the real ones.
