Two brothers, aged 27 and 29, were found dead in their home in the Indian state of Goa, as a result of what police believe was a particularly harsh fast, The Indian Express newspaper reported on April 26.
According to the report, Goa law enforcement officials found a woman and her two children in one of the houses, while the mother was unconscious and the children were dead. Police believe the family only ate one date a day for several years.
“The house was closed from the inside. The youngest son was found dead in one of the rooms. “The eldest son was found dead on the floor of the next room and his mother was found unconscious in bed.”“, the publication quotes a police officer.
He added that there was no food or water in the house and the bodies were crumpled. The autopsy report cited severe cachexia and malnutrition as the probable cause of the men’s deaths.
According to relatives, the mother and her children fasted frequently. Because of this irregular diet, they had disagreements with her father, who even lived separately.
The brothers’ paternal uncle, Akhbar Khan, said Mohammad Zuber Khan, 29, was educated and worked as an engineer. He had a wife and two children.
“The brothers were very attached to their mother… Why did they suddenly stop eating? The family was quite rich. “I don’t know if the brothers and their mother were under stress or suffering from mental disorders.”he said.
According to him, the mother and her children have not left home for several months.
In turn, the police officer said that initially the woman’s husband gave them some money for food through a small keyhole.
“But in recent weeks the family has closed that keyhole. They also placed furniture next to the door of the house to prevent people from entering.”He explained.
