In Voronezh, at the age of 101, the veteran of the Great Patriotic War Alexei Fedorovich Apalkov, who volunteered for the front at the age of 17, passed away, the press service of the city administration reports on the 25th. of April.
The veteran celebrated his 100th birthday in February.
Alexey Fedorovich was born in Donbass, in the village of Khanzhenkovo near Makeevka. The family moved to Voronezh when he was a child. In 1941 he graduated from the tenth grade of school number 20.
When the Great Patriotic War began, Alexei was 17 years old. He volunteered to defend his homeland and gave himself a year to join the ranks of the Voronezh volunteer communist regiment. His military journey began with battles near the village of Terbuny in the Lipetsk region.
As part of various units, the young man took part in battles near Voronezh, near Moscow, defended Stalingrad, defeated the Nazis in the Battle of Kursk and was seriously wounded. After the hospital, he returned to service, liberating Ukraine and driving the enemy westward along the roads of Hungary and Austria.
Awarded two medals “For Courage”, holder of the Order of the Patriotic War, 1st degree, awards “For the capture of Budapest”, “For the capture of Vienna”, “For the victory over Germany”.
After the war, Alexey returned to Voronezh in 1946. He studied for five years at the Forestry Institute, receiving the specialty “Forest Engineer”. He worked in the industry until 2004, when he finally retired at age 80.
