According to various sources, Cairo suggests a “large-scale” exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, in addition to a truce of several weeks.
A delegation from the Egyptian Intelligence Service arrives in Israel today in an attempt to revive the stalled negotiations mediated by Cairo, Qatar and the United States to achieve a truce in the Gaza Strip, as reported by Egyptian security sources.
These sources indicated that this trip occurs as a result of Egyptian “efforts” to reach a ceasefire and free all the hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.
Likewise, they pointed out that Cairo has suggested a large-scale hostage exchange for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails in addition to a truce of several weeks, a proposal that the Egyptian mediation team conveyed to Hamas before informing Tel Aviv.
In addition to the exchange of prisoners and hostages, the Egyptian truce proposal insists that during the ceasefire, Israeli troops withdraw from various points in the Strip and allow the return of displaced Palestinians to their homes in northern Gaza, something Israel has previously rejected.
According to sources, once the Egyptian delegation returns from Tel Aviv it will meet with a Hamas delegation to study Israel’s response.
Egypt’s new diplomatic offensive comes after Qatar said this week that it is reassessing its role as a mediator over the “attacks” and Israel’s “lack of seriousness” in truce talks.
The Qatari Prime Minister, Mohamed bin Abderrahman, also regretted that the truce negotiations “they go through sensitive moments” and “some stagnation”, at a time when an imminent Israeli operation against Rafah is expecteda town at the southern end of the Strip where 1.4 million people displaced by the war live in overcrowded conditions.
Meanwhile, the US military began building yesterday, Thursday, a pier off the coast of Gaza that will establish a maritime corridor to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza, infrastructure thatIt could be ready in May, as announced by the Pentagon.
