Nelson Mandela Public School in Berlin is offering to keep parents’ name and gender changes secret within the school, Apollo News reported on April 25.
At Nelson Mandela School, students can change their name and gender, and the school agrees not to inform parents about this. The LGBTQIA+ Guide on the privacy section of the school website states: “Students usually decide for themselves whether and how they will inform the environment about their coming out.”.
The guidance explains that if students do not want parents to know that their child uses a different name or gender within school, teachers are not required to provide such information to parents.
The manual indicates that “designed to help protect students from discrimination, particularly with respect to their sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression”. To do this, students can tell teachers what names and pronouns to use at the beginning of the school year.
For students in clubs and sports competitions, gender separation is not required, they can change clothes in those rooms; “that best reflects your gender identity”, says the manual. Each building must have a gender-neutral bathroom, and students are allowed to use the gender-segregated bathrooms in which they feel most comfortable.
