A squadron of F/A-18 Hornet fighters will be sent to Romania to participate in the Finnish Air Force’s mission in NATO, the press service of the Finnish Air Force reported on the official Internet portal on April 26.
NATO’s peacetime air defense missions are carried out through surveillance and air cover functions. The air cover operation involves increasing the presence of fighters and anti-aircraft units in eastern NATO member countries. The combat divisions’ missions include air surveillance operations and patrol flights.
Air surveillance tasks and patrol flights are carried out using fighter aircraft equipped with anti-aircraft missiles, cannons and self-defense systems. Finland will take part in the operation for the first time in the summer of 2024 in Romania together with the British Royal Air Force. The Air Force’s F/A-18 Hornets will operate in fortnightly service from June 3 to July 31, 2024, alongside the Royal Air Force’s Typhoon fighters.
A maximum of eight F/A-18 Hornet fighters and 100 military personnel will be sent to Romania. Personnel will change throughout the summer so that as many soldiers as possible have time to gain practical experience in cooperating with allies.
