The announcement of the possible resignation of Pedro Sánchez, the president of the Spanish government, has sparked speculation in Brussels. The Spaniard was not on the list of possible names to succeed Charles Michel as President of the European Council as he was the head of government of one of Europe’s largest economies, but that all changed with the news of his possible resignation. According to the site PoliticalSánchez’s name is being mentioned not only in connection with the European Council position, but also in the race to become NATO’s next secretary general.
The current favorite to become president of the European Council is António Costa, but some EU members are opposed to this choice because the former Portuguese prime minister is involved in Operation Influential Man. Antonio Costa is not yet a defendant and has not been heard, but two courts have said suspicions against the former prime minister are unfounded.
Another option for a successor to Charles Michel is Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, whose name is also controversial due to her government’s immigration policies.
Pedro Sánchez said a decision on whether to remain as head of the Spanish government would be announced on Monday.
